Window curtains can be more than a simple accessory that makes your rooms look better. Depending on the curtain type and on the fabric used, such window coverings can do more for home owners, including lowering their electricity bills. How is this possible? Well, it’s been studied that most of the heart in a room goes out through the windows and doors. This is why it’s important to insulate the windows as well as we can. With modern technologies, those double-layered glass panes filled up with inert gases help improving the insulation, but still, adding some thermal insulated window curtains can make things even better. Bathroom windows especially are extremely suitable for getting this type of covering, as nobody loves cold air drafts when taking a hot bath. If you have small babies, this becomes a must have, as they are very sensitive and may catch a cold easily.

Thermal insulation is not a property of the curtain fabric itself, but of the lining used in this purpose. As such curtains usually offer complete blackout, you can use them for double purpose: keep you warm and allow you use your home cinema system at its best. Beware that such curtains are quite heavy, so you need to buy strong rods that can support all that weight without bending or breaking. Maybe wrought iron can be the best idea in such cases. Otherwise, thermal insulated curtains are available in many styles, from those tab top curtain panels to pinch pleated drapes, eyelet curtains or rod pocket curtains. If you want, you can always add valances or cornices for making your window treatments match the interior of your house. Because they are heavy, it’s better to have your thermal insulating curtains made of two panels, in order to prevent deterioration when moving them on the rod. For very modern homes, there is the possibility to automate the curtain motion with the help of small motors controlled by remote controls. This can be an excellent solution for very old people who don’t have enough strength to move such curtains manually, or for ill or convalescent people who need to stay in bed and who are not allowed to make any kind of effort.

You’ve seen the advantages of such curtains when living in cold areas. However, these apply also for homes in very hot areas, this time preventing the cold air obtained though your air conditioning system to go out and let the heat come in.
