Caravan Camper

Having a caravan camper is the best of both worlds. Not only can you drive your house around with you, you can leave it wherever you like. How convenient is that! Camping adventures with a caravan camper can be an enormous amount of fun. You will love the comfort and luxury it affords. With all the luxuries of home, you may not even feel like you are camping at all.

Caravan Camper Types

Caravan campers come in various lengths and sizes. The smaller it is, the easier it is to drive around, maneuver and park. The larger it is, the more amenities you will have and possibly the more luxurious, spacious and comfortable it will be. Camper caravans have been made by numerous manufacturers over the years. Some have extensions in the side which can come out and extend your living space. These extensions can be fiberglass or even made of a tent material construction. Others were not even campers in a previous life. They are trailer conversions. Have a look around to see all the different types of caravan campers there are out in the market to get an idea for the one that best suits your needs.

Caravan Camper Modifications

Caravan campers are subject to a lot of customized modifications. The best advice is to try it out as is and start making a list of the things you may like to add. Personalizing a caravan camper can be very rewarding. Not only will you benefit from using the improved caravan camper, but it will be more valuable on the resale market.

Awnings & Add-a-Rooms - If your caravan camper does not have an awning, you can have a rail installed with a roll out awning inside. This is especially beneficial for those days when it is raining or you would just like a little shelter from the sun at your doorway. Add-a-Rooms are wonderful inventions. These screened in gazebo types are pulled up close to the caravan camper door and help to protect against troublesome mosquitoes and other insects. Some add-a-rooms can even be attached by rail like an awning.

Screen Door - A screen door is very handy to have on your caravan camper. During hot days, you can leave your door wide open for air circulation and not fear insects entering your space if you have a screen door. If your caravan camper did not come with one installed by the manufacturer, then you can have one custom-made or make it yourself. An alternative to making an actual screen door is to purchase a length of mosquito netting, install Velcro around the edges of the screen cut to size to fit the doorway, and then attach it to the doorway using the opposite side of the Velcro being attached to the door frame.

Air Conditioning - Older caravan campers may not have air conditioning in them. If not, then you can purchase small RV sized air conditioning units that can be installed into a ceiling hatch or window. If doing extensive traveling in warm climates, this may be an absolute necessity.

Closet Conversion - A caravan camper with a closet, may not be the ideal solution for storage. Usually when camping we do not carry around clothing that requires hanging. Usually we are bringing along comfortable clothing which can be folded. To better utilize a closet, turn it into a shelved cupboard. Simply install shelves into the closet. If you are planning on using the shelves to hold large containers, make sure you measure the containers you wish to store in the closet/cupboard before you determine the shelf heights.

Cosmetic - Cosmetic modifications are done all the time to caravan campers. As a matter of fact, if you have a woman around, you may notice that decor is an ongoing change! Things like painting the interior, reupholstering the cushions, putting up new curtains and installing new flooring are all things that are nice to have, but not usually necessities. They certainly are valuable for comfort and also for the resale market to update the look of your caravan camper.

Port-a-Potty Installation - If you do not have a washroom in your caravan camper, then consider purchasing a port-a-potty. Having a potty like this handy can be of the utmost in convenience and comfort while traveling, especially with a young family. If there is a little one in the back asking to use the washroom, there is no need to look for a service center, simply pull over to the side of the road and let him do his business! Port-a-Potties can actually be installed to be more convenient and take up less space. A common place to put one is underneath a settee cushion. You will need to cut a hole large enough to fit the potty and then you can insert it in. It is a good idea to make a hinged lid out of plywood as well so that the seating can still be used in that area. You may lose out on storage space by doing this, but it is well worth the floor space you are gaining back if you are moving it around with no place to keep it, not to mention the comfort value for you and your family.

Shower Add-On - If you do not have space inside your caravan camper for a shower, then consider adding one outdoors. You can purchase an outdoor shower kit at an RV supply shop. Another option is to use a solar shower. The water you put inside the solar bag is heated up in the sun and then you can hang it up and use it.

Very informative hub! You can tell you are talking from experience. I've recently bought a caravan and can't wait to travel round the UK and explore areas I didn't even know existed.

Yeah you certainly know your stuff, I wish we had some of the caravans and RV's over here in the UK that you have in the States and Canada. Most would probably be too big for our roads though :)

I like your point about the closet. You're right, when I go camping the only thing I use coat hangers for is to roast marshmallows over the camp fire!
