Camper Shell

Pick up trucks can have a camper shell added to them quite easily. They are usually made out of fiberglass or aluminum and are made as a housing accessory for the truck. Soft top camper shells are made from canvas. The camper shell is mounted on the rear bed of the pick up truck. Most of the time it covers the entire truck bed and sometimes it even overlaps to the top portion of the truck cab.

Having a camper shell is not only great for the resale market of your truck, it is also very handy for storage and utility purposes. A lot of service people will have them installed on the back of their pick up truck to help protect their tools and parts from weather elements and from thieves. The camper shell can be locked up to keep what is inside safe.

A camper shell is originally intended for camping purposes. It is a quick way to turn your pick up truck into a camper without having to spend a fortune on an actual camper. It enables the truck to have a dual purpose. You can use the truck with or without the camper shell. When it is not in use, simply remove it and store it either outside or in a garage or shed.

There are many different styles available for a camper shell. If you don't see what you like, you even make a custom one yourself from wood or modify an existing one. A camper shell can be had the same height as the roof of the truck cab or it can be made higher so you can get around inside it easier. The added clearance makes for more headroom as well as a higher capacity can be stored inside. Full height doors can also be included for easier access.

Windows in a camper shell can be on the sides, front and back. In addition, you can also get a skylight added in. The windows can be made to open with window screening for air circulation as well. If you intend on using your camper shell for camping or even utility use, you may want to consider getting tinted glass for privacy and theft protection. You can also get commercial caps which do not have any windows, but can have compartments along the outer sides for easy access to your tools.

Other options which are available for a camper shell include interior lights, additional brake lights on the back, insulation, or carpet lined.

Camping with a camper shell on your truck can lead to an exciting adventure. You will love the versatility of your camper shell and how well you can easily turn it from a utility space into an actual camper. It is also much easier to tote around a camper shell on your truck than a hauling a trailer. Having a camper shell is also more comfortable than camping in a tent. The full-sized doors and higher clearance area will help to contribute to a more comfortable living arrangement. Customize your interior, by adding a pull out mattress (a couch that converts into a bed like a settee is very handy and a space saver. Add a small countertop with sink area and a two burner stove. Alternatively, you can bring along a small bar-b-que as well. If you have room for it, a port-a-potty is extremely handy for traveling and camping. When customizing your camper shell interior, make sure you add lots of built in cupboards for storage. These are invaluable for small spaces and will allow you to pack everything you require a lot more efficiently.

I love the shell on my truck. I outfitted it for camping so that inside is a home away from home. There is a bed built in with a slide out drawer underneath. I can travel deep into the mountains and only need to find a place to park and I am camping.
