Camper awnings can benefit your camping experience immensely. The benefits of having camper awnings can be noticed immediately and if you didn't have one before, you will no doubt wonder why you didn't get one installed earlier! Camper awnings are made out of treated canvas (tent fabric) or vinyl. They are usually fitted inside a metal rod or roller tube on the side of the camper. There is a remote control or crank that when activated will roll the awning out to it's full size. Support rods are easily inserted to keep it at the correct angle and provide support. When camper awnings are not required, they can quite easily be rolled back into their space inside the metal rod. Permanent camper awnings are also available. These awnings have permanent rods installed onto the side of the camper and the awning stays extended. These are helpful for campers and RVs which are permanently planted in their campsites.

Benefits of Camper Awnings

Here are some benefits of having camper awnings on your camper, trailer, RV or 5th wheel camper:

Sun Protection - Camper awnings protect against the sun's harmful rays. Lots of campers like to sit out by their campers in lawn chairs. Having an awning to protect you from the sun means you can still enjoy the outdoors without worrying about the sun causing damage to your skin.

Rain Protection - There is nothing worse than getting soaked while camping. Having camper awnings can help reduce the effects of rain by creating an overhead shelter over the doorway portion of your camper. It will not only protect you from getting rained on if you are standing under it, but camper awnings will also protect the front doorway access to the camper.

Insect Protection - Camper awnings can have netted extensions on the sides which attach to the awning and become a sort of add-a-room or gazebo. This greatly adds to the benefits of camper awnings. Mosquitoes and other insects can put a real damper on your camping fun. Being protected under mosquito netting while still outdoors means you can still enjoy the fresh air.

Cosmetics - Camper awnings help to add that finishing touch to your camper's exterior look. The effect of having camper awnings creates a welcoming and friendly atmosphere and helps to create a wonderful looking exterior decor. Having an awning looks like you have given much attention to little details which have added a thing of beauty to your camper.

Convenience - Camper awnings are convenient to use. They have their own storage place within the side of your camper and thus do not take up any extra valuable space. They are easy to use and can slide out with just a few cranks on the handle or push of the button.

How to Care for Camper Awnings

Camper awnings will last a long time if they are well cared for. For starters, be sure and stow it away if high windy conditions are expected in the local weather. Wind can easily create small tears in the fabric, if not destroy it to pieces. Not only that, but the support bars can become detached and create a danger or cause damage to the camper or RV as well.

Be sure that your awning is installed at a slight angle so that water will not be tempted to pool in particular areas. This can cause wear and damage to the fabric by putting undo stress on it.

To wash camper awnings, the best way (due to the large size) is to remove the fabric and clean it with a water hose and a little soap plus a scrub brush. Make sure you rinse out the soap and hang it up or lay it out to dry. You can keep camper awnings looking fresh and clean by washing it often in this manner.

With age, camper awnings will deteriorate. They will develop wear at the places where they are creased to retract back into their roller bar. They will also develop wear from the elements such as wind and sun. Do not despair, however. They can be replaced. Camper awnings are sold as the awning replacement as well. You do not have to purchase a brand new camper awning system.

You are absolutely correct. My wife and I have been camping for years and wouldn't consider not having an awning. We like to dress ours up a bit to make it an inviting place to socialize, relax and drink coffee under in the mornings.

Take care.
